A giant spell

My shoulder is still painful and I’m still writing a painful part of the novel, but there’s not long to go now until I’m able to start turning around the lives of my characters.

What is fiction-writing? Why do I do it? Every time I ask myself that, I give a different answer. A couple of days ago, I came up with this.

A novel is a giant spell. First you describe life as it is and then you describe life as you’d like it to be, hoping somewhere in the process to make it so in reality.

  1. Nice :-). But am sorry to hear about your shoulder. Are you giving yourself a hard time, by any chance?? Love, Rx

  2. Oh and - it's been bothering me - 'at my window with a broken wing'. Glad I've finally remembered where your blog title came from!

  3. Roselle - it's so good to hear from you, and strangely - or perhaps not strangely - I've been back recently reading your blog. (I have to ration myself severely with outside influences as I know you understand!) I'm really glad to hear that you have more time for yourself now and are feeling restored.
Yes, I'm being hard on myself but I'm working on it! Yes, you've got the source of the blog title (significance to be explained - probably - in The Novel).
I'm still working on the novel I started on your online course. It fell into the doldrums for a while and then recently was given a HUGE boost by the YouWriteOn site where you review each other's work.

  4. B am VERY glad to hear re the boost - so you'd recommend that site to other novelists? - My new novel, btw, came out a few weeks ago: 'The Burning Ground', set on Dartmoor during foot and mouth. Love to you and Frog

  5. I'd DEFINITELY recommend www.youwriteon.com - I found it so much better than writing groups - more honest and more in-depth. Not only was I enormously encouraged by the reviewers' positive response but the criticisms were so enlightening. (It was also instructive reviewing others' writing.)
I saw your new novel on your blog. I think that must be the one you read out a synopsis for in CNW 2003! Many congratulations. I love the title and the jacket pic. I hope it does well for you - and will get myself a copy to read.

  6. Ah that's well worth knowing, B. Good. I'll recommend it.

Gosh - perhaps it was - I did write it before that - took this long to find a publisher (the same one as Imago, which took 17 years! Never give up!). Thanks re pic - my own, off a favourite Dartmoor track... Delighted you might buy it :-) thanks!
